DAY THREE: What Drives Your Life? = motivation
• Quote: “the man without purpose is a like a ship without a rudder”
o Have you have actually been moving without the ability to control your direction of travel and unable to stop the forward motion?
o What does that feel like?
• 5 most common driving forces:
1. guilt
• religion itself often gets folks here; never good enough
• regrets, memories,
• the PAST CONTROLLING OUR FUTURE
i. TOO BUSY LOOKING BEHIND OURSELVES
ii. HIT THE TREE INFRONT, IF LOOKING IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR
• We are products of our past, but not prisoners of it.
Psalm 32:1
New International Version (NIV)
Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
(If God has provided forgiveness for us, then who are we not to forgive ourselves?)
2. Resentment and Anger:
• Holding on to hurts of past
• Burns oneself by holding on to “hot embers” and keeping them hot by revisiting them in our minds and by our actions
• Forgive others for our OWN sake
Job 5 “Call if you will, but who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
2 Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.
3. Fear:
• Trauma
• Unrealistic expectations
• High-control home
• Genetic-predisposition
• BUT
i. Miss opportunities
ii. Miserable with status quo
• Use weapons of faith and love
1 John 4:18
18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. Faith and love
4. Materialism:
• Having more will make me more happy
• Only temporary happiness; not joy
• Self worth not equal to net worth
• Security only in our relationship with God
(story of rich young ruler)
5. Need for approval
• Meeting expectations of parents, spouse, friends
• “what will others think”?
• “I don’t know the key to success, but one key to failure is to try to please everyone”
• opinions of others
i. cannot serve two masters
ii. not here to change others opinions of us
5 Benefits of Purpose Driven Life
1. Meaning to our life
a. “I feel like a failure as I’m trying to become something, and I don’t even know what that is”
Job 7:16
I despise my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone; my days have no meaning.
Eccl 1:2
“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”
b. Hope: need “hope to cope”
c. Comes from having purpose
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
2. Simplify your life
a. Purpose defines our actions; do and do not
b. Highlights the essential; priorities are set
c. Foundation for decisions
d. Doing too much = stress, fatigue, conflict
e. Enough time to do God’s will
Proverbs 13:7
The Message (MSG)
7 A pretentious, showy life is an empty life; a plain and simple life is a full life.
f. Peace of mind
Isaiah 26:3
New International Version (NIV)
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
3. Focuses your life
a. Concentration toward clarity
i. Effective by being selective
ii. Not distracted by minor issues, frantic spinning
iii. Not constantly changing direction
iv. “maybe this time it will be different” = problems not solved
Ephesians 5:17
New International Version (NIV)
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
b. diffused vs. focus light = energy that can burn = potent
4. Motivates your life
a. Passion
b. Meaningless work drags us down, not work
c. Robs our joy
5. Prepares us for eternity
a. Lasting legacy on earth?
b. What others say when we die does not matter
c. What God says does
i. Eternal perspective
ii. Not worldly
10b For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’” 12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.
We will be asked two crucial questions:
1. What did you do with my Son, Jesus Christ?
a. Did you accept him, learn to trust and love him?
b. Answer = where you will spend eternity
John 14:6
New International Version (NIV)
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
2. What did you do with what I gave you?
a. Gifts, talents, opportunities, relationships
b. Answer = what you will do in eternity
