A number of years ago, when the PFC e-mail group first started, there was a discussion about what we could do for the homeless folks we encountered. One of our members, Rob Voss, explained that he put articles of clothing in his suitcase so that while on layovers he might find someone to give them to who could really use them.
I thought this was a great idea so I put a heavy pair of wool socks in my bag. They stayed there a long time, I'm afraid. But one day I had a San Diego layover. It was a cool, rainy day so I put the socks in my jacket pocket as I headed out for my waterfront walk.
If you've been to the Seaport Village area in SAN you know that there are a lot of homeless folks there. Now the question was who to give the socks to! Not to the panhandlers that approached looking for money. Lots of them.
As I walked along I saw a fellow sitting, head down, on a set of steps. He wasn't panhandling so I approached him and asked him if I could buy him a sandwich. He agreed and as we walked toward the sandwich shop I commented on his brand new combat boots. He said that a local church had given them to him and that they were great but....he sure could use some warm socks as he had none. You should have seen the look on his face when I pulled those socks out of my pocket! And you should have seen the hair standing up on the back of my neck as I realized that the Lord had orchestrated that moment!!
We enjoyed a prayer together and some heartfelt fellowship before he left to go back to wherever he was going. Later as I walked back to my hotel I saw him sharing the sandwich I bought for him with a legless homeless fellow who was sitting in a protected place out of the rain in his wheelchair!
I often wonder where Ron is and how he is doing. And I thank my Lord for that incredible moment!
