The message below is from my good friend, "Tym" Tymczyszyn. His Dad, who was affectionately called "Pop" by all who knew him, was an incredible man. He was an immigrant from Poland who pulled himself up by his bootstraps, became an aeronautical engineer and retired as a test pilot for the FAA. He flew and evaluated so many different types of aircraft from WWII to the the late '80s. He passed away a number of years ago and was recognized by many in the industry for his numerous accomplishments. Below is a note from his son, Tym, concerning the video below: >> Pop (Joseph John Tym...) was working for the CAA, which became the FAA around 1958 at the dawn of the jet airliner age, as a Certification Test Pilot. I'm not sure of his actual title, but two of his assignments at the time were to be the government test pilot responsible for certifying both the Boeing 707 and then the DC-8. This video talks about the extent of those first tests.
By the way, if anyone wants to bet on who has the most type ratings, I'd bet that Pop would win. I have his actual 1950 license here which states "All Ratings Authorized." Fun.
Bet they don't give those out anymore.<< www.dc8.org/video/birthvideo.php
