Dr. Jeffress is the senior pastor at the 14,000 member First Baptist Church of Dallas. He is well known for his unashamed and courageous biblical stands on cultural issues. He has shared his Christianity on many TV programs as well as from his pulpit.
His book, Courageous, is a survival school of sorts to help Christians to survive in the hostile and toxic environment in which we live. He blends together biblical events with current world events in an easy to read book that gives us ten different strategies to help us through these difficult times.
The strategy that really impacted me is called “Do the Next Right Thing.” He uses Vice Admiral James Stockdale as the example of that. Stockdale was a navy fighter pilot who was shot down and imprisoned for almost eight year by the North Vietnamese. He was the senior officer among the POWs and his leadership was the reason that many of his fellow POWs survived. He stood by his convictions and would not yield to the difficult circumstances that he found himself in. This chapter concludes with the idea that there is always the “next right thing” for us to do.
Here is a quote from Jeffress:
“The good news is that no matter how difficult or hopeless your circumstances may seem right now, you can take the necessary steps to make a better life for your yourself and those around you. In other words: do all the good you can, where you can, while you can.”
And then he follows that up by reminding us that we are not saved by good works, but we are saved for good works, giving us examples of how to do that.
I highly recommend this book to you!
