December 29 1879 - Billy Mitchell, WWI hero and early advocate of air power, is born in Nice, France. (d. 1936) 1891 - Edison patents "transmission of signals electrically" (radio). 1891 - Transmission blocked (just kidding). 1932 - Ruth Rowland Nichols becomes the first woman pilot of a commercial passenger airline, New York and New England Airways. 1939 - First flight of the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. It holds the record for the largest production run of any bomber. (18,482 produced)1940 - London suffers its worst air raid of the war as Luftwaffe bombers drop incendiary bombs starting thousands of fires and killing 200 civilians. An iconic photo shows the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral still standing amidst the smoke and flames. 1972 - Eastern Airlines Flight 401, a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, crashes in the Everglades while the crew investigates a burned out bulb on the landing gear indications. The autopilot had become disconnected and the aircraft started a slow, turning descent, undetected in the darkness over the swamp killing 103 of the 176 passengers and crew. The ghosts of the flight crew were reportedly seen on other L-1011s that used parts salvaged from Flight 401. 1989 - Canada is the first country in the world to ban smoking on domestic airlines.
