As a chaplain I hang out with a number of PDs and FDs these days. The other evening I was sitting with a dispatcher when a 9-1-1 call came in. As is typical, over 90% of those calls are not emergencies but that is another story. This call came from a cell phone. On the dispatcher’s map a bullseye came up with a circle around it. The explanation was that with a cell phone they only get in the vicinity of the caller’s address and the radius of the circle is determined by the proximity of cell towers. So an exact address is not determined. However, if the call is made from a landline the exact address is immediately displayed. I was going to cancel my landline because all I seem to get there is robo/sales calls. I guess I’ll hang onto it now. It could make a lifesaving difference!
