When I was a young man, I had the opportunity to sing the Messiah many times with a full orchestra, professional soloists, and the glorious surroundings of the Naval Academy Chapel. At that time, I did not "understand" the words, but they made my soul arise and chills run over my spine. Now looking back at the supportive scripture helps to illuminate the truth and brings great joy to this time of year. Allow me to share a few of God's word. I am always amazed at how much Old Testament prophecy we see here. I pray they may speak to you as well. Remember, there are two sections of Handel' Messiah; Christmas and Easter section? Now I know why !!!
* "And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together:
for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it." (Isaiah 40:1-5)
* "O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,
get thee up into the high mountain:
O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem,
lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid;
say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
Arise, shine; for thy light is come,and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee." (Isaiah 40:9)
* "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,
The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."
(Isaiah 9:6)
* "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd:
he shall gather the lambs with his arm,
and carry them in his bosom,
and shall gently lead those that are with young." Isaiah 40:11
* "Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth." (Revelation 19:6)
" And the seventh angel sounded;
and there were great voices in heaven, saying,
The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord,
and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever." (Revelation 11:15)
"And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written,
KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." (Revelation 19:16)
* Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump:
for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible,
and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption,
and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this curruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality,
then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written,
Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor. 15:51-57)
